01 // THE THESIS
What Sequoia Capital Actually Believes
FOUNDING BELIEF
Back the best founders as early as possible
Don Valentine's founding insight: the single variable that most predicts company success is the quality of the founder, not the size of the market. Sequoia has refined this selection instinct over 50 years and thousands of companies.
PATTERN RECOGNITION
50 years is a real moat
Sequoia has seen every technology cycle since the microprocessor era — minicomputers to PCs, PCs to internet, internet to mobile, mobile to cloud, cloud to AI. That long memory means they recognise inflections earlier than newer funds.
GLOBAL FOOTPRINT
From seed in Menlo Park to growth in Mumbai
Sequoia operates separate but connected funds across the US, Europe, India and Southeast Asia. This gives them pattern recognition that crosses geographies: a market structure emerging in India often foreshadows what will happen in Europe 3 years later.
COMPANY BUILDING
The Arc programme invests before incorporation
Sequoia's Arc scouts programme provides capital and mentorship to exceptional people before they've even decided what to build. It's the most upstream point in the funnel of any major VC.
LONG DURATION
They do not force exits
Sequoia held Apple, Google and YouTube positions for years beyond typical fund structures. They converted their LP base to an open-ended structure in 2021 to eliminate pressure to sell positions prematurely.
CRITICAL LENS
The Black Swan memo defined a new VC standard
In March 2020, Sequoia's 'Black Swan' memo to founders about COVID — written two weeks before most institutions acknowledged the severity — became one of the most-read VC communications ever. Sequoia speaks plainly when they see risk.

05 // HOW TO READ SEQUOIA CAPITAL
Strengths, Blind Spots & the Honest Assessment
The track record speaks for itself
Apple. Google. YouTube. WhatsApp. Airbnb. Stripe. Zoom. Snowflake. DoorDash. Nubank. The consistency across every technology cycle, seed through growth stage, and multiple geographies is without parallel in venture capital.
Their writing is high-signal primary source material
The Black Swan memo was more useful to a founder in March 2020 than any government guidance. Roelof Botha and Alfred Lin publish frameworks on company-building worth reading as standalone documents.
Scale creates selection challenges
With $85B AUM, Sequoia must deploy at growth-stage to put capital to work. Their growth-stage returns have historically underperformed their seed/Series A returns. Scale is the enemy of the skill that made them great.
China strategy has been complicated
Sequoia China was one of the most successful growth-stage operations globally — and then geopolitics forced a split into HongShan and Sequoia proper. That turbulence adds complexity to their global thesis.
How to use Sequoia research
When Sequoia writes an essay or issues guidance, read it — they have a track record of being directionally right about market inflections. Use their thesis writing as a hypothesis source for your sector dashboards.
06 // SEQ VS YOUR HUB
Where Their Thesis Meets Your Sector Dashboards
| Sequoia Capital Theme | Your Dashboard | Agreement / Tension |
|---|---|---|
| Enterprise software (Snowflake, Zoom) | AI & Compute | Sequoia's enterprise thesis — infrastructure unlocks productivity — underpins the AI compute buildout. Their data platform investments anticipate the AI training data problem. |
| Healthcare | AI Biotech | Sequoia's health investments are more health-tech than AI biotech. Watch for convergence as AI reshapes diagnostics. |
| Fintech (Stripe, Nubank) | No direct match | Stripe payments infrastructure underpins many companies in your watchlist. |
