Reading the backdrop
Rates (US10Y)
The gravity on growth stocks
Rising long yields compress valuations of long-duration cash flows — quantum, humanoids, pre-revenue SMRs and biotech feel it first and hardest.
VIX
Risk appetite gauge
Sustained spikes drain speculative sectors regardless of fundamentals — also historically the best moments to deploy the cash "opportunity" sleeve.
Gold
Hedge confirmation
Gold strength alongside equity weakness is diversification working; gold and stocks rising together often signals inflation or currency concerns.
Bitcoin
Liquidity thermometer
BTC tends to front-run liquidity shifts — weakness there often precedes pressure on the most speculative equity sleeves.
Dollar (DXY)
Overseas earnings & commodities
A strong dollar pressures commodity prices (minerals) and international revenue (Japanese FA names); a weak dollar is a tailwind for both.
03
A hot September CPI on Oct 14 pushed the 10-year Treasury yield as high as 5.33%, and PPI added to the pressure; by Friday it had eased to about 5.09%. CME FedWatch put the odds of a hike at the Oct 27–28 meeting near 17% and December near 89%, with Fed Chair Warsh offering no signal at the IMF meetings.
Equities took the hit in technology: the Nasdaq closed Friday at 26,140 (-2.1% on the day, -4.5% on the week, ending a four-week winning streak) and the S&P 500 at 7,659 (-1.1%; -2% on the week), while the Dow (52,002) gained 0.7% on the week. The S&P technology sector fell over 3% on Friday as CoreWeave’s roughly $50B of debt put AI financing back in focus. The VIX level was not verified this week.
Oil added a second inflation leg: WTI jumped 3.4% to $101.35 and Brent 3.5% to $109.55 on Middle East risk, and energy was the S&P’s best sector. Gold rose about 0.5% to roughly $4,190 an ounce, bitcoin traded near $81,400 on its second straight weekly loss, and the dollar index slipped to about 101.8.
Beneath the tape, the stance board made one upgrade and three cuts: Quantinuum was raised to a small Speculative position after a Morgan Stanley upgrade, while Energy Fuels went to Avoid on a $500M at-the-market raise and Novartis and Schrodinger moved to Watch on valuation. The week ahead is dominated by Tesla and Meta on Oct 21, SpaceX on Oct 20, the FOMC on Oct 27–28 and Microsoft and Alphabet on Oct 28. Ether and VIX levels were not re-verified this week.
