01 // THE THESIS
What DCVC Actually Believes
FOUNDING BELIEF
The physical world is the final frontier for software
DCVC was built on the thesis that the biggest unsolved problems — feeding the world, producing clean energy, defeating disease, defending nations — are in the physical world. The internet transformation of knowledge-work is largely complete; the transformation of atoms has barely begun.
TECHNICAL FOUNDERS
PhD-level expertise as a selection signal
DCVC specifically backs founders with deep scientific or engineering credentials. Their LPs and advisors include Nobel laureates and DARPA programme managers. They evaluate the science before they evaluate the market.
AGRICULTURE
The food system is an enormous AI opportunity
DCVC has one of the most developed agriculture practices in VC. Precision agriculture, vertical farming, food systems — they see food as a $10T+ global market being transformed by sensors, AI and biology.
BIOTECH
AI-accelerated biology is the next frontier
AlphaFold changed the biology industry permanently in 2020. DCVC has been investing in AI-accelerated biology since before AlphaFold — computational genomics, synthetic biology, AI-designed enzymes.
DEFENCE & INTELLIGENCE
Dual-use tech is their competitive advantage
DCVC's technical depth means portfolio companies often have both commercial and defence applications. They don't shy away from defence — the most important technical problems often have national security dimensions.
LONG HORIZON
They accept longer timelines in exchange for bigger outcomes
Deep tech takes longer. A drug discovery company, a vertical farm, a quantum computing system — none follow SaaS metrics. The flipside: when a deep tech company works, the barriers to replication are enormous.

05 // HOW TO READ DCVC
Strengths, Blind Spots & the Honest Assessment
Technical depth is genuinely rare in VC
Most VCs evaluate technology at the product level. DCVC evaluates it at the science level — they can assess whether a protein-folding approach is novel or a quantum error correction scheme is viable.
Agriculture is an under-served category
The food system is one of the largest industries in the world and one of the least-funded by traditional VC. DCVC's early commitment to ag-tech has given them networks that competitors can't replicate.
Deep tech failures are expensive
When a SAAS company fails, losses are small. When a vertical farm or drug discovery company fails after 10 years and hundreds of millions of capital, the losses are large.
AUM is small relative to aspirations
At ~$2B AUM, DCVC can't lead large rounds in the companies they believe in, which means they sometimes lose influence over portfolio companies at scale.
How to use DCVC for your hub
DCVC's content is the best free primary source for AI-meets-physical-world thinking. Planet Labs' satellite data underpins analytical capabilities across your defence, space and minerals dashboards.
06 // DC VS YOUR HUB
Where Their Thesis Meets Your Sector Dashboards
| DCVC Theme | Your Dashboard | Agreement / Tension |
|---|---|---|
| Planet Labs (satellite data) | Space Economy | Planet Labs is one of the most important data assets in the commercial space economy. Daily satellite imagery feeds agriculture, defence, mining and climate analytics. |
| Agriculture and critical minerals | Critical Minerals | DCVC's precision agriculture investments intersect with the critical minerals supply chain — satellite data for mine monitoring, AI for exploration. |
| Biotech (computational biology) | AI Biotech | DCVC's biology investments are at the intersection of AI and life sciences — the same thesis as your AI Biotech dashboard. |
